Thomas Cook Group Airlines launches Majorca-based airline

Currently operating airlines in Germany, the U.K and Scandinavia, Thomas Cook Group Airlines has applied for a new Airline Operator Certificate in order to launch a new Majorca-based airline. Flights are scheduled to commence in early 2018.
Flying under the name Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics, the new airline will be able to provide support to other carriers in the group, particularly during peak seasonal periods. It is believed the new base in Majorca will provide greater flexibility, while remaining competitive on cost. The Balearics are one of the Group’s most popular destinations.
The new carrier will start operations with a fleet of three Airbus A320 jets which were previously being flown for Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium. These jets will take over the short- and medium-haul flights currently offered by Condor, the German Group carrier, while also replacing existing third-party aircraft leases.
According to Christoph Debus, Chief Airline Officer Thomas Cook Group: “The new airline and base will provide us with the right platform to better manage the seasonal demand in our business, giving us more control at lower cost as we continue to expand the choice of destinations we offer our customers. With more than one million Thomas Cook customers flying into Palma every year, we have a strong existing infrastructure on which to build.”
This news follows on from the announcement earlier this month that Air Transat, the Canadian Airline, has entered into an agreement with Thomas Cook Group Airlines for the exchange of aircraft on a seasonal basis to create a better equilibrium for seasonal demand for short- and medium-hall planes in the European and Canadian sector.
