QantasLink's next-generation Airbus A220 has landed in Launceston, making it the first non-capital city in Australia to welcome the new aircraft. The inaugural flight, operated by the A220 named Koala, touched down at 10:40am, representing the second A220 to join QantasLink's fleet.
The A220 is more fuel-efficient than its predecessors and offers a modern cabin with larger windows, around 20% more overhead locker space, specially designed seats, and a greater sense of space for passengers. The aircraft is steadily replacing QantasLink's ageing Boeing 717s as part of the Qantas Group's domestic fleet renewal.
QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan expressed excitement over the introduction of the A220 to Launceston, noting that customer feedback has been positive due to its enhanced comfort and eco-friendly design. Launceston Airport CEO Shane O'Hare praised the A220 as a game-changer for Australia, highlighting its larger windows, quieter engines, and the boost it will provide to local businesses through increased passenger capacity.
The A220 is already in service between Melbourne and Hobart, with flights between Sydney and Launceston set to begin in late October.
