Dr Johannes Bussmann has been appointed as the next CEO of MTU Aero Engines AG. The decision was unanimously made by the supervisory board of the DAX-listed company during an extraordinary meeting held on December 17. Bussmann's contract will have a term of five years.
Bussmann is expected to assume his new role during 2025. He is currently serving as CEO of TÜV Süd AG. Previously, the aerospace engineer, who holds a doctorate in the field, led Lufthansa Technik for seven years as its CEO, overseeing maintenance, repair and overhaul operations. Bussmann has also been a member of the MTU Supervisory Board since 2024 but will resign from this position as he transitions to his new role.
He succeeds Lars Wagner, who announced in October that he would not seek another term as CEO after his mandate expires at the end of 2025. Wagner plans to take on a new challenge as CEO of Airbus's commercial aircraft division.
Dr Bussmann holds a degree in aerospace engineering and a doctorate in combustion technology from RWTH Aachen University. He became CEO of TÜV Süd AG in early 2023, having previously spent over 20 years in various leadership roles at Lufthansa Technik. Between 2012 and 2015, he served as Chief Human Resources and Production Officer before stepping into the CEO position. During his tenure, Bussmann was instrumental in the 2017 establishment of EME Aero, an engine MRO joint venture between MTU and Lufthansa Technik, located in Rzeszów, Poland.
