GKN Aerospace has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art 150,000 ft² facility in San Diego, California, as part of a US$55 million investment aimed at enhancing its global MRO network. This expansion underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable, advanced MRO solutions and positions it to meet the growing demand in the aero-engine MRO market.

The facility, located adjacent to GKN Aerospace’s existing engines site in San Diego, effectively doubles the company’s MRO capacity in the region. Equipped with cutting-edge automation and robotics, it will support advanced repair solutions for current and next-generation engine components, including GE LEAP and Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engines, as well as legacy platforms. This modernisation aims to improve product reliability, streamline efficiency and reduce turnaround times for GKN Aerospace’s global customer base.

Joakim Andersson, President of Engine Systems stated, “We are incredibly proud to open this new state-of-the-art facility and to share this milestone with our customers, employees and stakeholders. This significant investment brings the latest automated manufacturing technologies to our business, while emphasising our commitment to our customers in North America and helping to meet the growing demand for MRO in the region.” He also acknowledged the local government and community for their support in establishing San Diego as the ideal location for this expansion.

With this investment, GKN Aerospace now supports over 400 customers globally, providing innovative repair technologies for civil and military aeroengines. The current workforce of 900 employees in San Diego is expected to grow significantly, with continued investment in specialist skills and capabilities to meet future demands. This development marks a key milestone in GKN Aerospace’s strategy to strengthen its presence in North America and deliver world-class MRO services worldwide.
