Binter Canarias (Binter), the flag carrier airline of the Canary Islands, Spain, has signed an agreement with aircraft manufacturer ATR to acquire four new ATR 72-600 aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation strategy. The deal also includes an option to purchase five additional units, reinforcing Binter’s commitment to operating a state-of-the-art fleet, a key characteristic that has earned the airline international recognition.
The ATR 600-series aircraft are the most fuel-efficient in the regional aviation sector, consuming 45% less fuel and emitting 45% less CO2 than regional jets of a similar size. This makes them an environmentally friendly choice aligned with the airline’s sustainability goals.
Binter President Rodolfo Núñez highlighted the importance of this investment, emphasising the airline’s focus on passenger comfort and connectivity. He also underscored the efficiency of the PW127XT engines, which are optimised for ATR models, allowing for lower fuel consumption, reduced CO2 emissions and lower operational costs. Núñez reaffirmed Binter’s commitment to a more sustainable aviation model.
The total investment for this acquisition will be approximately US$215 million, with financial support from major Spanish banks, including Santander, CaixaBank and BBVA.
Since its acquisition by Canarian businessmen in 2002, Binter has consistently modernised its fleet, primarily incorporating ATR aircraft in various expansion efforts. The airline’s investment in ATR aircraft now exceeds US$1.1 billion.
In addition to its ATR fleet, Binter also operates 16 Embraer E195-E2 jets, which have been gradually introduced since December 2019. These jets are used for domestic routes to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, as well as longer international flights, further strengthening the airline’s route network and operational efficiency.
