Lufthansa has announced plans to assume control of part of the flight handling operations for Lufthansa Group Airlines at Munich Airport later this year. A key element of this strategy is the potential full acquisition of Swissport Losch GmbH & Co. KG from its current shareholders, Swissport Cargo Services Deutschland GmbH and Losch Airport Service München GmbH. The move is aimed at improving operational stability and enhancing service reliability for Lufthansa Group Airlines' customers.
The proposed acquisition is contingent on securing a handling licence, finalising a commercial agreement and obtaining approval from antitrust authorities. By pursuing this deal, Lufthansa is reinforcing its long-term commitment to Munich Airport. The airline has also confirmed its intention to retain all Swissport Losch employees and offer them long-term career opportunities. Additionally, the existing shareholders will continue to provide advisory support during the transition to self-handling.
Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines and Hub Manager Munich, stated: “Securing jobs at Munich Airport and further developing the travel experience for our customers are of great importance to Lufthansa. Swissport Losch is a strong company with a long-standing partnership with Lufthansa. The company has outstanding employees who are characterised above all by their professionalism, commitment and service quality.”
Marc Losch, CEO of LOSCH Airport Service, shared similar sentiments, adding: “The future of Swissport Losch and its employees in Munich is very important to us. We are pleased that we can offer our employees a secure future with this perspective.”
If finalised, the acquisition will strengthen Lufthansa's operational capabilities at Munich Airport while maintaining high service standards and securing jobs for existing employees. (€1.00 – US$1.05 at time of publication).
