Latvia’s national airline airBaltic is preparing to cut between 500 and 700 positions across its bases in Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn as it adjusts its operations and organisation under a new business plan, the company released.
The estimate is based on current planning assumptions and could change as the process progresses. AirBaltic is consulting trade unions on possible reduced workloads for pilots and cabin crew, while new organisational structures for other parts of the business are expected to be defined by mid-October.
The airline currently employs about 3,000 people across the Baltic states.
The workforce changes are part of a broader plan aimed at strengthening financial stability, focusing the airline’s network and improving operational efficiency.
The plan also calls for a smaller fleet of Airbus A220-300 aircraft and greater reliance on year-round ACMI partnerships, under which other airlines provide aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance.
AirBaltic said the measures are intended to maintain reliable connectivity for Latvia and the wider Baltic region while aligning the airline’s cost base and organisational structure with its future scale.
