AviLease, a global aircraft leasing company based in Saudi Arabia, has placed its first-ever direct purchase from an aircraft manufacturer, finalising a firm order for 20 Boeing 737-8 jets, with options for an additional ten aircraft. This strategic move marks a key milestone in the lessor's ongoing expansion and signals its intent to become a major player in the global aviation leasing sector.
The Boeing 737-8 jet is part of the latest generation of single-aisle aircraft, known for its enhanced fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The addition of these aircraft will support AviLease's aim to provide modern, environmentally conscious fleet solutions to its airline customers around the world.
Edward O'Byrne, CEO of AviLease, commented on the significance of the deal: “We are pleased to conclude our first direct original equipment manufacturer (OEM) order, complementing our growth strategy towards being at the top of the industry. Building on our recently achieved investment grade ratings, this transaction proves our ability to transact across all market channels, including sale and lease-back, secondary trading, M&A and now direct OEM purchasing. These new aircraft will accelerate our growth and enable us to deliver the industry's latest generation, fuel–efficient fleet solutions. We extend our gratitude to the Boeing team for the strong long-term relationship we have built.”
This order also supports Saudi Arabia's broader aviation ambitions. As part of its ‘Vision 2030' initiative, the Kingdom aims to transform itself into a global aviation hub, with plans to serve 330 million passengers and welcome 150 million visitors annually by the end of the decade. AviLease's latest acquisition is aligned with this national objective, helping to strengthen the country's aviation infrastructure and global connectivity.
