Delta Air Lines (Delta) has announced plans to add 30 new Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body aircraft as part of its ongoing fleet renewal strategy, aimed at improving fuel efficiency while enhancing the onboard experience for customers. The 787 will represent a new aircraft type for Delta and will complement the airline’s previous order for 100 Boeing 737-10 MAX aircraft, with deliveries to begin following certification.
The order marks the next phase of Delta’s international evolution, supporting the expansion of its global network and building on a strong platform for international growth underpinned by the airline’s industry-leading domestic network and joint venture partnerships across all regions. Delta expects to operate the largest international schedule in its history this year.
Delta has selected GE Aerospace’s GEnx engines to power the aircraft and has entered into a long-term services agreement with GE Aerospace for engine maintenance. The GEnx engine incorporates advanced carbon-fibre materials and an innovative blade design, delivering lower weight, improved durability and greater fuel efficiency.
The aircraft order is in line with Delta’s previously announced capital expenditure and capacity plans. Following this commitment, Delta has a total of 232 narrow-body and 54 wide-body aircraft on order for delivery in the coming years.
